Back in the late 1970s, Dieter Rams was becoming increasingly concerned by the state of the world around him: “An impenetrable confusion of forms, colours and noises.”

Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design?

His answer is expressed in his ten principles for good design.

早在上世纪70年代末,Dieter Rams就愈来愈关注周围的世界状况了,“一种不可理解的形式、色彩和噪音的混合体。”

意识到自己也是对那个世界的一个显著的贡献者后,他问了自己一个重要的问题,“我的设计是好设计吗?”

The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.

好的设计是创新的

创新的可能性是永远存在并且不会消耗殆尽的。科技日新月异的发展不断为创新设计提供了崭新的机会。 同时创新设计总是伴随着科技的进步而向前发展,永远不会完结。

A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.

好的设计是实用的

产品买来是要使用的。 至少要满足某些基本标准,不但是功能,也要体现在用户的购买心里和产品的审美上。 优秀的设计强调实用性的同时也不能忽略其它方面,不然产品就会大打折扣。

The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

好的设计是唯美的

产品的美感是实用性不可或缺的一部分,因为每天使用的产品都无时无刻的影响着人类和我们的生活。但是只有精湛的东西才可能是美的。

It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.

好的设计让产品说话

优秀的设计让产品的结构清晰明了。更强大的是它能让产品自己说话。最好是一切能够不解自明。

Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

好的设计是谦虚的

产品要像工具一样能够达成某种目的。 它们既不是装饰物也不是艺术品。因此它们应该是中庸的,带有约束的,这样会给使用者的个性表现上留有一定空间。

It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

好的设计是诚实的

不要夸张产品本身的创意,功能的强大和其价值。也不要试图用实现不了的承诺去欺骗消费者。

It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.

好的设计坚固耐用

它使产品避免成为短暂时尚反而看上去永远都不会过时。和时尚设计不同的是, 它会被人们接受并使用很多年甚至是在当今被一次性商品充斥的社会。

Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user.

好的设计是细致的

任何细节都不能敷衍了事或者怀有侥幸心理。设计过程中的悉心和精确是对消费者的一种尊敬。

Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

好的设计是环保的

设计能够对保护环境起到极大的贡献。让产品在整个生命周期内减少对资源的浪费,降低对自然的破坏并且不要产生视觉污染。

Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials.

Back to purity, back to simplicity.

好的设计是极简的

简洁,但是要更好–因为它浓缩了产品所必须的具备因素,剔除了不必要的东西。

大道至简,平淡为归。
